Aloe barbadensis
Useful as well as handsome — the gel is worth having in the house. Wants sun and almost no water. The only way to kill it is kindness.

How to keep it well
- Light
- Full sun, four to six hours. A bright sill or an open balcony.
- Water
- Deeply but rarely. Every two to three weeks in summer, monthly in winter, and let the soil dry out completely in between.
- Grows to
- 40 to 60 cm. It produces pups around the base that you can separate and pot on.
- Pot
- A 6 inch pot for the small, 8 inch for the large — each with a drainage hole, in free-draining sandy soil.
- In Lahore
- Move it under cover during heavy monsoon rain. Sitting in wet soil is what kills aloe, not heat.
Split a mature outer leaf for the gel — good for burns and dry skin. Take from the outside, never the centre.
