Patharchatta
Bryophyllum pinnatum
The one that grows itself. Lay a leaf on damp soil and whole baby plants sprout along its scalloped edges — every child who sees it wants one. Ours are grown on from our own leaves.

How to keep it well
- Light
- Bright indirect light, or an hour or two of gentle morning sun. It copes with less, it just grows slower.
- Water
- Every ten days or so in summer, monthly in winter. The leaves hold water, so it would rather be dry than wet.
- Grows to
- 40 to 60 cm on a single upright stem. Pinch the top and it branches instead.
- Pot
- A 6 inch pot with a drainage hole, in free-draining soil.
- Propagating
- Break off a mature leaf, lay it flat on damp soil, and leave it somewhere bright. Plantlets root themselves within two to three weeks. You never need to buy another.
- In Lahore
- Keep it out of hard afternoon sun from May to July, and off cold tiled floors in January.
Give the spare plantlets away. They root so readily that people remember where they came from — which is worth more to you than the plant is.
